2ANNAS 2010 GUEST PROGRAMME

ISRAEL IN CLOSE-UP
2ANNAS Guest Programme in cooperation with
The Sam Spiegel Film and Television School, Jerusalem
The retrospective programme of the short films by students of The Sam Spiegel Film and Television School marks its the 20th anniversary and is a unique opportunity to explore these works as part of the 2Annas film festival for the very first time. The four films have garnered top prizes at various film festivals and are supreme and intriguing examples of the School's approach to filmmaking, which is thoroughly based on the storytelling.
The films present an unabashed look at the parts and events of the country and its community strangers are seldom allowed access to – private spaces such as tiny, modest apartments, synagogues, ritual baths; run-down alleys and apartment buildings, traditional Jewish religious rituals, family gatherings, and feasts.
In part of the works, the symbolic coincides with the personal, with themes of the religious rites servings as incisively apt metaphors for the events of the characters' lives we witness; what may seem undecipherable, exotic, or strange, proves only to emphasize the universally approachable themes of truly tragicomic and poignant human drama.
